Feeling Appreciated

I want to thank our Church Family for the blessing bestowed on us last Sunday night. At the Singfest last Sunday night, we were given a gift of over $900 – an incredible act of generosity surpassing our wildest imaginations. Landon and Cecil's kind words and the warm sentiments expressed from everyone were encouragements that touched us deeply. May God bless each of you and thank you for your loving kindness.

In His service,

Jared Altic

1000 Hits

We've passed 1000 hits today. The blog has been up for over two months and has over 4o posts from our two ministers. Our readers have asked us to include more devotional material, which we'll try to do, and we'll also continue to comment on the goings on here at Wyandotte County Christian Church.

Worshippers Welcome

The worship team is looking for new members! If you can sing or play an instrument, especially guitar, and would like to join us in leading worship on Sunday mornings, please contact me. I'll be making a schedule for the next couple of months, so let me know as soon as possible!

P.S. If you're unsure about your skill level or have never led worship before, don't worry... you can be trained!

Kids Party on Halloween (Part 2)

Okay, okay... Jared's been asking me to contribute to the blog for some time now, so here goes. We need cookies, drinks and chips for the Kids' Party.  If you can bring any of these items, please contact Jane D.! (How was that for my first time?)

Dave is Right

As of tonight, we are about half way through our current Financial Peace University Class. FPU is the class taught by Dave Ramsey which our church has offered several times in the last year and a half.

Landon R., our class facilitator, emailed me today to let me know that Dave Ramsey is releasing a new and updated edition of the class for the new year. I hope that this is an incentive for our FPU alumni to attend the classes again. Anyone who has paid to take the class in the past is a lifetime member and deserves to sit in the class, hear the information again, participate the group discussions, and rediscover financial peace.

Our current classes meet at 7pm Mondays at the church through December 3. Childcare is provided (God bless you Alicia!). Classes for the new year will be announced soon.

New Directories

We have finally printed the new church directories, enough for every family and then some. They contain contact information for families in the church and listings of church officers and ministry leaders, meeting times, and some emails. The directories will be available tomorrow morning (Oct 21) and have bright, yellow covers.

Sunday Reminders

Don't forget:

  • the Gideons will have a brief presentation tomorrow.
  • we'll ordain Sheldon M. and Tina S. to the ministry of deacon and deaconess.
  • our Church Photo (after a rain delay) is tomorrow after the worship service and before Sunday school.
  • Worship Services will be somewhat abbreviated to accommodate the busy schedule.
  • the church is hosting a Chiefs watch party from 2:30pm to 6:30pm. Feel free to bring snacks and hang out with us.

Thanks for Retreating

Thank you to all the guys that went to the Men's Retreat. We had a great time and really appreciate your investment in the camp, your brothers, and your walk with the Lord.

Thanks to Shannon A. for (over)feeding us. Steaks and homemade potatoes goes a long way toward a good weekend. And thank you to everyone for the deserts that were sent up to camp. They were fantastic!

Please pray for the Men's Retreat in the future. Whether we do it on our own or as part of the Camp, we have lots of plans to make this program one that ministers to our lives as Men of God.

Learn about Jehovah's Witnesses

We are going to have a special three-part class about the Jehovah's Witnesses on Wednesday nights this fall. Dewey B. is going to teach this class on Wednesday nights from Nov. 28 to Dec. 12.

We'll make this class available again sometime in the future if you're unable to attend this time around.

Upcoming Events (October)

There are several upcoming events on the calendar:

Oct 18 – This is the combined board meeting. We have seven board meetings per year (odd numbered months and October) and the October meeting is our largest meeting. It's the last meeting for those going off the board at the end of their three year term as well as the first meeting for those coming on the board.

Oct 20 – Church work day. We have a number of jobs to do, between both buildings and outside. We're starting at 8am; please contact one of the deacons for more information. There's a lot of work to do on the old building.

Oct 21 – The Gideons will give a 10-minute presentation at the beginning of service and our church photo will be taken at the end of the service. We'll also ordain two of our deacons who were absent today. At 3pm we'll have a watch party for the Chiefs game; all are welcome to come to the church and hang out during the game.

Oct 27 – The annual church bonfire at the Jones' will be held the evening of the 27th. Please bring lawn chairs and a carved pumpkin for the pumpkin contest. There will be activities for the kids including a hay ride and the traditional Halloween piƱata. This is one of our favorite events on the church calendar.

Oct 28 – We're having our annual Singfest, 6pm at the church. We've been taking suggestions for songs to be sung and we'll have appetizers and fellowship to follow the hour long event.

Oct 31 – Finally, don't forget the kids' party on Halloween.

This list doesn't include all of the regular events like Joy Circle, FPU, Wednesday Family Night, etc.

Men's Retreat This Weekend

The Men's Retreat starts at 6pm (registration - dinner at 7pm). The registration cost is a $40 donation, so please don't let the cost stop you from coming. The profits from the donations all go to the camp.

We'll be sleeping in the dorm, so bring a bedroll or sleeping bag for the bunks. Hot showers and such will be available.

Contact John F. for carpooling/caravaning up to Mission Lake (it's about an hour and fifteen minute drive from the church). I know of about ten guys going from our church so far; if anyone else is going please contact me.

We'll be done by about 2:30pm Saturday and home by about 4pm.

Kids Party on Halloween

Do you have plans for your little ones on Halloween? Well, Halloween is a on a Wednesday this year and so we've made plans for them; here's a note from Jane D. She writes:

Hi all,

Through deliberation of our options for October 31, we will be playing at the church with the youth group. YeeHaw! This means: bring your flashlights for tag outside, be in clothes (camouflage) that can get dirty for hide-n-seek, have your sneakers on ready for a sack race and anything else we can come up with for the kids to play. If you would like to bring a snack, – you know the kids (Joe, Dustin, and Mike) would love them. We will supply each child with a small sack of candy (even you, Jarod) before the evening is done!

OH, the kids would love it more – if Mom and Dad played too!!!!

I will be taking care of the candy end of things, if you would like to bring treats, please email me. If it rains we will be inside the old building.

See you then,

Jane

Called for Rain

We had a wet day yesterday that led to our Church Photo being postponed. Our rain date for the photo is October 21st.

Please don't miss it!

Random Notes for Sunday

  • Don't be late Sunday; we'll be starting right on time or a little early due to all the activities that morning.
  • We're issuing our ballots-that-aren't-really-ballots on Sunday. It's important to note that this is not just a democratic vote, like a popularity contest you'd see outside of the Church. The folks who are candidates for a three year term have been selected by the Elders after months of prayer. But our Elders still desire the affirmation of the congregation before this is made official. So we pass around what appears to be a ballot; but the "ballot" is really a feedback tool for the Elders. And with conscientious Elders like ours, we can trust them to take the feedback quite seriously.
  • Our church photo will be after the Worship service and before Sunday School. Below is the angle the photographer will probably use. Our rain-date will be October 21.

  • For those of you scoring at home, I'll be preaching on the "other" Lord's Prayer from John 17 this Sunday. My Sunday School class is working on Revelation 17, 18 and Matthew 24.
  • We'll finally publish another church directory after this Sunday.

You Oughta Be in Pictures (Reminder)

Don't forget about the church photo we'll be taking this Sunday! We will go outside for the picture after an abbreviated Worship Service (approx. 10:20am). Everyone is invited to be a part of the photo; we're wanting a snapshot of that particular Sunday – members, regular attenders, guests and everyone.

Copies of the photo will be available from the photographer for a fee.

Sunday School will run as normally scheduled (hopefully).
