Work and Play

WCCC had its workday today and got a lot accomplished. Most visible perhaps is the relocation of the playground. Formerly it was on the south side of the old building, nearer the road and out of sight. Now it will be located north of the parking lot, east of the main building in full view of watchful moms and dads.

The playground is not finished yet – the chain link fence is incomplete – so don't let the kids out there yet. But it will be complete soon, just in time for the weather to change.

Thanks to all of those guys who did the hard work today!

Keeping Time

Thanks to Leonard H. last night for mounting our new clock in the back of the sanctuary.

We've generally avoided clocks in the sanctuary because we don't want people distracted by such things. But we do need to be better stewards of our services and in all areas, from announcements, to worship, to communion, to the sermons, we've been lax about staying on track (I'm probably the worst offender).

I know for me personally, having a analog clock that I can easily see while speaking will help me pace my sermons more effectively. I hope it's a blessing to everyone else as well.

New Worship Times - May 4!

Beginning May 4, 2008, we will offer two worship services!

8:30 - 9:50 - Worship
10:00-10:50 - Sunday School
11:00-12:20 - Worship

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Why go to two services?
To accommodate more people. With one service we can seat upwards of 180 (we had 186 people in that room on Easter) but with two services we expect to seat more than 300 people. Our parking lot is full during a service with 150 whereas multiple services will help alleviate that.

2. Will the contents of one service be different than the other?
No. Both services will be the same in worship, announcements, sermon, and length.

3. Why 8:30am?
We wanted a compromise between starting too early or running too late. We feel that 8:30 is late enough in the morning that it will not prevent people from attending.

4. Can I still make announcements at church?
Yes. And if it's important enough to be announced in one service, it needs to be announced in both services. Therefore, we're now asking that your announcements be coordinated in advance of Sunday Morning with Jared Altic. Deadlines for the the bulletin and on-screen announcements are Friday.

New Mugs and Pens

We have new coffee mugs and ball-point pens available in the office. The old ones were black and white, the new ones are white and light blue. The more important difference though is that the new ones have the church's web address on them.

So if you need some pens or a coffee mug, come see Jared Altic in the office. But keep in mind, if you take them, make sure they serve their real purpose. Give them away, use them at work, let them be conversation starters, evangelism tools, and tokens of encouragement.

We don't charge for them, but if you wanted to donate an extra five dollars for the mugs, that would be great.

2500 Hits

We passed 2500 hits today on this blog. Thanks for reading! I'll mark out occasional milestones like this just to help keep track of how the blog is doing.

We're going to try to add more content here and use this space more effectively. Please check in regularly or subscribe to it through an RSS reader.

I'm considering reworking our labeling system. It's just not as effective as I'd like it to be. If you have any suggestions I'll take 'em!

On Teachin in the Church

Here's a rough outline of my part of Saturday's Men's Leadership Training. I'm teaching on teaching, of course. We're expecting a pretty good crowd of men.

Teaching in the Church

Step One: Dig a Deep Well.
Study, Study, Study. Go further than what you'll need. A big part of Bible teaching is understanding the "whole counsel of scripture" and a primary cause of false teaching is knowing the Bible only in part. Read the Bible widely with a good variety of tools and resources.

Step Two: Clean House.
Let it affect you! Spiritual shallowness cannot remain hidden forever. There's no bigger turnoff to the Gospel than the hypocrisy of a teacher.

Step Three: Know the Lay of the Land.
Know your audience: Preparing for a kindergarten class is different than preparing for a junior high class and a women's group is different than the youth group.
Know your venue: Is this an hour long class setting or is it expected to be a three-minute devotion?

Step Four: Stand Your Ground
Make one point and make it well. Always try to have just one dominant thought. Don't make apologies or provide excuses, just say what the text says.

Elder's Retreat

The four elders and two ministers had a wonderful retreat this today. We met for over six hours at Cecil's house and got a lot done. We'll be announcing specifics in coming months but the gist of it comes down to:

  • We'll be starting new processes for evangelism and new members.
  • The Elders will be insisting on more small group involvement and coordination
  • WCCC is going to making purposeful steps forward in the near future.
More info will be coming soon! Please be praying about how Wyandotte County Christian Church can better fulfill the Great Commission.

We also learned today that…
  • Dan plays Jenga like it a pro.
  • that Bob Russell guy sure can preach.
  • Cecil's dog can be used as a pillow, an armrest, or an ottoman.
  • Eric and Jay-rod are crazy for crazy-thin crust pizza.
